Blog Traffic That Works
October 29, 2007 | By Monika Mundell |
Even the newest of bloggers hopefully realize that without traffic we are doomed to fail. After all we need readers to absorb our various blurbs unless of course we absolutely don’t care for this and choose to keep our blog private.
For all others, there are literally thousands of ways to generate traffic to our blogs. There are paid ways and many free ways to achieve this and for this particular post I have chosen to write about a sure fire way to generate tons of new readers and clicks.
So without keeping you in a shroud of mystery, here it is:
Host a Blog Contest!
This isn’t really news in regards to being a secret way that only a handful of chosen bloggers in the know use to generate readers frenzy.
But it is certainly in my eyes a very under valued and hardly used promotion overseen by thousands of new and old bloggers worldwide. I’ll let you in on a secret:
You don’t always have to give away money as a contest prize! Sure, I do agree that monetary prizes pull a lot more traffic because we all want more of this “papery stuff”.
But if you are strapped for cash, you can use other means of rewarding your competition participants.
Here are a few ideas to help you brainstorm the options:
- Offer advertising space
- Offer a review
- Give them a place in your Blogroll
- Give them a free ebook of yours
- Offer them a free product of yours
- Give them link love if you have good PR
- If you are a software creator, offer your software as a prize
- If you are a writer, offer to do a few guest blogging entries or write a set amount of articles that belong to the winner. They can then use them for their own business.
Blog Contest not only help to get more regular readers, but they also create buzz in the blogosphere. The better the prizes, the more buzz you will receive from others.
If that is not enough, there are many dozens of Contest Directories you can utilize to submit your contest to. And I advice you to do this, especially if it is your first time.
The Contestblogger blog offers links to 23 sites that offer to post your competition. The negative side of this is that you will need to invest some time to do this. Each site needs to be contacted individually as they belong to different people. But it is well worth your time.
Even if only 6 pick up your contest it could mean that hundreds of interested readers help to spread your contest message for you. The more people know, the more entries you will get.
I have just successfully finished my first contest and have already planned another one for next month. I simply love what it can do to both blog traffic and new friends being made on the Internet.

Thanks for the tips. It will only be a matter of time before I start using these methods. Right now I am focusing on blogging every day, commenting on blogs, and staying active on a couple of social networks. Can’t wait to try these out.
Thanks Stephan,
Those are great ways to grow your blog anyway.
Good luck with your blog!
